Patrolled for 5-10 minutes then escorted fortresses returning Lorient including the Memphis Belle on its 25th Mission back to the english Coast.Crews of 2 fortresses seen bale out. One of them about 20 miles from start point over which blue section orbited until shortage of petrol forced them to pancake at Bolthead. F/Lt Watson having thrown out his dinghy to help crew in water with Mae Wests only. Other sections landed at Harrowbeer and Portreath 120 Minutes

    129 Sqn Ibsley 31/05/1943 F/Lt.E.O.Watson Presentation In the course of the morning the squadron was Honoured by the visit of Brigadier F.D.Hammond Chairman of the Central Railways Uruguayan Staff and Mrs.Hammond – the occasion marking the handing over of a spitfire aircraft EE602 purchased by donations from the Central Railways Co’s staff. The Ceremony was witnessed by a gathering of squadron personnel. The Brigadier after being introduced to Squadron Officers made a short speech in which he stated that the gift of the aircraft was a practical expression of Uruguayan

    sympathies with the allied cause. Squadron Leader Gonay responded suitably and Brigadier and Mrs

    Hammond were entertained to lunch at the mess after which F/Lt Watson gave a short demonstration flight in the spitfire.

F/O.R.H.S.Ewin stayed behind to have a tail wheel changed and another machine taxied into him, wrecking his machine. On the way back in the Moth, Ewins and F/Sgt Currie ran into a thunderstorm and landed at West Malling, where they stayed the night. EE602 was abandoned at Martlesham 31/7/43 100 Minutes
